Achieve better school revision results with a diet free from junk food

Students planning school revision or thinking about exam revision while at college for GCSEs and A-levels would be wise to think about their diet and healthy eating during this important time of their lives.

It is crucial, according to nutritionists, for children and young people to eat properly. Failing to do so has been found to cause concentration difficulties.

In a study by the School Food Trust, 50 per cent of teenagers were found to be able to study for just half-an-hour before they lost concentration.

There is evidence that healthier eating can improve brain function, according to the trust, and that eating junk food impeded young people's performance.

Some 42 per cent of the 13 to 17 year olds surveyed (more than four out of ten) prefer to eat chocolate when revising. Biscuits and carbonated drinks are also favoured by youngsters with more than three in ten using these during revision sessions.

School revision and a healthy diet

Caffeine tablets and energy drinks are also used a great deal by as many as a quarter of all teenagers, the research proves.

The trust's chairman and celebrity chef Prue Leith said, "It's often said you get out what you put in - our research shows that children are able to perform better in class when they have had a healthy school lunch rather than junk food. Children aren't stupid and they know that healthy food is better for them."

She said it was possible that eating a healthier food diet could make the difference between success and failure. The trust has produced a guide to eating more healthily during school revision time.
