Food for thinkers and A level exam revision

Revision recipe for successful A level exams

Forget the clichés about food for thought (and yes, we acknowledge we used recipe for success in the title of this article) but here at Justin Craig we know that the number one tip for successful A level exam revision is to book onto one of our revision courses so you can benefit from our expert tutors, welcoming exam revision centres and comprehensive range of revision subjects.

However, we also understand that in order to undertake a serious revision plan and to ultimately achieve the exceptional results you are looking for, your diet is an important factor.

The thinker's diet

Start with breakfast – high fibre cereals such as bran flakes with muesli or porridge with fresh fruit contain complex carbohydrates that will release energy throughout the morning. Protein can also be a good source of sustained energy, but avoid greasy fry-ups. Grilled sausages and bacon, and a poached egg will all contribute to healthy bones, muscles, skin, and blood function.

Some fats are good for you - oily fish such as tuna, salmon and sardines can offer high doses of Omega-3 fats, which are healthy oils reputedly good for improving memory - essential in the A level exam revision diet.

If you don't like fish you could try nuts and seeds such as walnuts, pumpkin seeds or flax seeds - sprinkle them on your cereal or into a salad to add a revision boosting crunch to your meal.

Eggs aren't just for breakfast - eggs contain choline which can aid in the remembrance of words and phrases, so for lunch or dinner an omelette or scrambled egg on granary toast is a great choice.

If you struggle to get vegetables into your diet you could try chopping up a handful of sugarsnap peas and adding them to your omelette, or how about some sweetcorn, and pre-cooked chopped carrot or broccoli goes really well mixed in with cooked chicken or ham.

Go green and orange and red - yes, we could probably all do with a few more colours in our diet and fruit and vegetables offer some of the healthiest and most nutritious food options out there. The vitamins in fresh produce will help ward off coughs and colds, plus offering a boost to your concentration levels and short term memory - just what you need at exam time.

So instead of biscuits, try to snack on fruit. Berries can be a great way of fighting off hayfever symptoms thanks to flavernoid quercetin found in soft fruits such as raspberries, strawberries and blueberries. What's more, these fruits are in season just at the right time for A level revision and exams. So, grab a punnet or two and get revising.
