GCSE revision courses start booking as more GCSEs approved for next year

New GCSE Qualifications to be Rolled Out

As students start to book on GCSE revision courses for exams to be taken in 2009, major changes are looming next year for the secondary school qualifications.

England's exam regulator Ofqual - the Office of the Qualifications and Examinations Regulator - has approved more than 180 GCSEs to be taught in the new school academic year.

The exams have been reviewed to ensure they fit with the new secondary school curriculum. A total of 181 GCSEs covering 60 different subjects have been accredited.

Subjects covered by the accreditation include science, geography, history, languages and classics. English, maths and ICT are also part of the overhaul of GCSE exams.

Key elements of the overhaul:

  • GCSEs are becoming more modular like A-levels.
  • Grades can be improved by the introduction of units that will be easier to re-sit.
  • Coursework projects can be completed in class as part of a process called 'controlled assessment', not outside of lessons.
  • Stronger explanation and analysis skills will be expected from students because more varied questions are to be introduced into GCSE exams.

Ofqual chairwoman Kathleen Tattersall said, "These new GCSEs will ensure that all young people are able to demonstrate their skills, knowledge and understanding when studying for a qualification that meets their individual needs."

Justin Craig tutors are all very familiar with the requirements and approaches of examining boards whether for GCSE or A-level exam revision, enabling them to provide excellent support for students that includes application of successful exam techniques.
