Pythagoras Theorem and Maths Revision Courses

It is perhaps hard to imagine that maths revision courses and an historical figure from the sixth century BC are connected - but they are.

Pythagoras was an ancient Greek mathematician and philosopher who determined a common relationship between the lengths of sides on right-angle triangles.

He is accredited with being one of the first recognised mathematicians and his theorem - the Pythagoras Theorem - should be well known to our A level revision and GCSE maths revision students because it is a theory instilled into them early on in their learning.

Exam revision, Maths and Pythagoras

Pythagoras was born on a Greek island, Samos, travelling through Egypt learning, among other things, maths.

He founded a group devoted to studying philosophy, especially in music and mathematics. Called the Brotherhood of Pythagoreans, the group is considered almost cult-like using prayers, rituals and symbols - and giving numerical values to ideas and objects, endowing them with spiritual and mystical qualities.

Tradition has it that Pythagoras proved that the Pythagorean Theorem was always true - that the sum of the squares of the sides of a right-angled triangle is equal to the square of the hypotenuse - although there is no evidence that Pythagoras proved it.
