Drama and Theatre Studies Exam Preparation

'The play's the thing...' - Hamlet

This is often done through a close and practical study of the set texts encouraging students to develop their own ideas and practical performance technique so examiners see how their ideas would actually work on stage.

'Tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow...' - Macbeth

For many questions we look at what is 'contemporary performance' and encourage students to focus on how they want the audience to respond to what they see on stage.

Cultures change and we need to explore the performance conditions when plays were written as well as performance conditions in theatre today, ranging from coping with chorus speeches, or speaking iambic pentameter to the use of physical theatre often focusing on the perennial question of the relationship between actor and character.

So a good knowledge of some theatre practitioners, those who have practical and theoretical ideas about the function of performance, is always going to help students whether this is a requirement of their specification or not, as they encourage reflection on intentions for an audience linked to appropriate style and genre of performance. Therefore we will always introduce some new performance and directorial skills to all our students.

'Is this a dagger I see before me...'' - Macbeth

Even though students might not be studying design elements we always emphasis the importance of having a good overview of theatre, looking at props, set, lighting and sound etc as relevant.

'Once more unto the breech dear friends once more' - Henry V

And finally exam technique- exploring key words, use of time, what to include, types of questions and mark schemes to help students understand just how examiners think!

We look at past questions but rather than let students simply answer questions then have them marked we work through the paper little by little encouraging the correction of mistakes before going onto the next bit.
