GCSE Mathematics Revision Courses
The syllabus for GCSE Mathematics is divided into four distinct areas
- Number and Algebra
- Shape and Space
- Data Handling
- Using and Applying Mathematics
The first three areas are content based and the fourth area is a selection of techniques which are applied in the three content areas.
Revise GCSE Mathematics
In Mathematics the syllabus is the same across all Awarding Organisations (eg Edexcel, OCR, AQA) and the content is divided into the three content areas identified above..However the exam boards have their own distinctive style of questioning and it is vital that the JCE tutor knows beforehand what exam board you are following.
Students enter at Foundation (Grades C-G) or Higher (A*-D) and they will be divided appropriately prior to the course.
A typical GCSE revision course will feature four themed sessions of length 1.5-2 hours. The four themes will relate directly to the syllabus revising the appropriate level content in
- Number
- Algebra
- Shape & Space
- Data Handling
In each session separate topics will be considered and initially there will be tutor led discussion and a summary of each topic followed by practice past exam questions based on that topic. The tutor will provide help, guidance and reminders of the techniques to be used on an individual basis. Students will be encouraged to discuss and clarify their ideas with each other directing any remaining areas of concern to the tutor. Sometimes it will become apparent that a more in depth explanation of a topic is needed and the tutor will re/teach a topic to the students.
In the final session(s) the group will work through past papers. Model answers will be provided as well as mark schemes. During this session the tutor will illustrate good exam technique and go through the allocation of marks for various questions direct from the mark scheme. In addition strategies for revision will be shared with the group.
